Fire union approves proposed new contract

September 10th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Following nearly two years of negotiations, the 61 members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1715 voted Tuesday evening to ratify a new three-year contract with the city. The new deal will allow the city’s non-union fire chief to decide how many employees will work each shift and clear the way for the possible use of part-time and volunteer help in the Cumberland Fire Department. Ken McKenzie, president of Local 1715, confirmed the news during an interview with WCBC News. The Local 1715 approved the new contract with a majority vote. The City Council expected to sign off and approve the contract as part of  next Tuesday's regular business meeting.
