Five Indicted in Fort Cumberland Homes shooting

Five suspects were recently indicted by the Allegany County Grand Jury in connection with the shooting incident which occurred at Fort Cumberland Homes, in Cumberland, on March 30, 2016. The following were indicted:

 

Mark Antonio Brown Jr., 22 years of age, Cumberland

Charged with: Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Assault, and 12 related counts

 

Marquise Lanard Holt, 25 years of age, Cumberland

Charged with: Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Assault, and 12 related counts

 

David Lee Kesler Jr., 24 years of age, Cumberland

Charged with: Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Assault, and 12 related counts

 

Nickoli Dundar Cakus, 18 years of age, Cumberland

Charged with: Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Assault, and 10 related counts

 

Timothy Bobby Miller Jr., 28 years of age, Cumberland

Charged with: Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Assault, and 10 related counts

 

            Brown, Holt, Kesler, and Cakus were all arrested previously and were served with their indictments at the Allegany County Detention Center.

 

            Miller was arrested on 04/26/2016 at a private residence on Columbia Street by members of the C3I Warrant/Fugitive Unit with the assistance of the Maryland State Police Apprehension Team.

 

 

            On March 30, 2016, at 7:59 PM, the Cumberland Police responded to Fort Cumberland Homes for a reported shooting. When Officers arrived they learned that several suspects had approached another group of individuals who were standing in a common area between the residential buildings. One of the suspects produced a handgun and fired several shots at the victims. The suspects and the victims all fled the scene.

 

            A search of the area for the suspects, with the assistance of the Maryland State Police, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, and a Cumberland Police K-9 dog was conducted, but the suspects were not located at that time.

 

            Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Several spent shell casings were recovered from the scene, as well as other evidence related to the incident.

 

            C3I Investigators interviewed a number of witnesses and reviewed surveillance video.  Investigators also served search warrants on a private residence and vehicle and recovered additional evidence.

 

            As a result, C3I Investigators were able to identify Brown, Holt, Kesler, Cakus, and Miller.

 

            Brown, Holt, Kesler, Cakus, and Miller have all been arrested on the indictments and are currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center pending their next court appearances.

 

The investigation into the incident is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I. Additional arrests are pending.
