Today is Flag Day, when all Americans are encouraged to fly the flag.
The day commemorates the adoption of the first American Flag in 1777.
"Old Glory" has been in its current configuration since just after Alaska and Hawaii were added to the union in 1959.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
