Food Distribution Set At Hancock Middle High School Wednesday

June 7th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

On Wednesday, June 8, associates from BB&T will team up with the Maryland Food Bank – Western Branch to volunteer their time at one of the food bank’s Pantry on the Go events in an effort to provide vital nutrition to local students in need of extra food during the long summer break.

Currently in Washington County, 1 in 8 Marylanders don't know where their next meal will come from. For children, that figure is even more dire, with nearly 1 in 4 kids at risk of food insecurity. This struggle is magnified during the summer, when hundreds of thousands of food-insecure students lose access to the free and reduced-price school meals they rely on for daily nutrition. Through their support of the Maryland Food Bank Pantry on the Go Program this Wednesday, BB&T hopes to raise awareness of the issue of hunger and encourage others in the community to volunteer their time to local charitable organizations.

This Pantry on the Go event, which will take place at Hancock Middle-High School, is part of BB&T’s eighth annual Lighthouse Project, an annual initiative where the company works with a local nonprofit agency to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need. Since the inception of the BB&T Lighthouse Project in 2009, BB&T associates have completed more than 7,700 community service projects, donated more than 385,000 hours in volunteer service and touched the lives of more than 11 million people.
