Foot Traffic Across Baltimore St. Bridge To Be Rerouted During Replacement

The city is in the midst of planning a new $3 million replacement for the Baltimore Street Bridge, which spans Wills Creek and provides a main artery into the historic city center for motorists and pedestrians. While construction isn’t expected to begin until next year- the estimated six month project will see pedestrian traffic prohibited for much of that time. City engineer Bobby Smith said pedestrian traffic will be closed for two to three months. Foot traffic will be rerouted using Cumberland Street and crossing Wills Creek using the Market Street Bridge.  Another option that many people might look at during that time is the pedestrian bridge behind the George Washington headquarters that leads to the Western Maryland Railway Station. A recent caller to WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” said that one issue with that area is the large number of panhandlers that sometime harass people as they attempt to cross.
