September 13th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Fort Hill High School was recently ranked 438th out of 500 schools in the “Beating the Odds”

category of Newsweek’s edition of America’s Top High Schools. This year, Newsweek sought to recognize

schools that beat the odds, performing better than statistically expected for their level of poverty. Fort Hill was listed in a category that ranked schools on how well they prepare their students for college, taking students’ socio-economic background into account. The methodology behind adding this new category includes a variable to control for average student poverty levels, which have a direct correlation to student achievement and college readiness. Fort Hill’s percentage of students who receive free or reduced meals is just over 49 percent. Newsweek partnered with Westat, a research firm headquartered in Rockville, MD, and one of the nation’s leading research firms, to produce the high school rankings. More that 14,000 schools were considered for the rankings.
