Maryland’s top financial officer wants public school students statewide to have more of the summer off. During a recent visit to western Maryland, Comptroller Peter Franchot said students shouldn’t be going back to school before Labor Day. Citing benefits to the state’s tourism industry, as well as to students and families, he said the Labor Day weekend — traditionally a last chance for families to enjoy summer together — should be preserved. He adds that starting school before Labor Day not only cuts “into the opportunity for Marylanders to spend more time together as a family, but it also has a negative impact on small businesses that rely on the tourist trade.” In Allegany County, the upcoming school year is scheduled to begin August 27 — 5 days before the beginning of the Labor Day holiday weekend. The school calendar is drawn up by assembling stakeholders — including parents and school staff — and agreeing on holidays and days off for professional development.
