Free Rockabilly Concert Slated For Friday Downtown

July 11th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Comes Alive concert series welcomes Ryan Cain and the Ables to Bands on the Bricks on Friday evening, July 15. The band will be performing at the Historic City Center Stage at the corner of Liberty & Baltimore Streets at 6:30 pm. The performance is free of charge, but seating is limited, so don’t forget your folding lawn chair.

One of the earliest forms of rock and roll music came out of Memphis in the early 50s on labels like Sun Records. This hyped up, rhythmic music became known as rockabilly music, and took the nation by storm. Like all forms of music, rock and roll changed over the years, and rockabilly slid into the ranks of nostalgia. Occasionally it makes a return to the limelight with groups like Brian Setzer’s Stray Cats, but mostly the sound is carried forward by committed traditionalist like our feature group this week: Ryan Cain and the Ables.

Ryan Cain and the Ables are a high energy rockabilly band from Clarksburg, West Virginia. Formed in 2011, this band plays traditional rockabilly/50s and western swing music.  In late 2012, the group released a CD titled ‘My Pistol Rides Shotgun,’ a collection of songs written by Ryan Cain. The CD has received extensive radio airplay and charted on the Roots 66 chart, the Roots Music Report Chart, and in December 2012 was a most added CD on the Americana chart.

Every Ryan Cain and the Ables show is a history lesson on the early influences of rock and roll.  Equally versed in guitar, standup bass and piano, Ryan covers music from Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley and a whole lot more.  The Ables perform much more than a musical journey paying tribute to the pioneers of rock and roll, rockabilly and early country music.
In addition to Ryan Cain, the group consists of Matt Eakle on guitar, Evan Jones on electric bass and acoustic guitar and Gary Hamrick on drums.  Ryan Cain and the Ables perform extensively throughout West Virginia and surrounding states.  Their song ‘Yes Indeedy’ was recently featured in Episode 1, season 10 of the television show SUPERNATURAL on the CW network.

Cumberland Comes Alive is Western Maryland’s premier outdoor concert series. It is presented by Burgmeiers Hauling Inc. and is produced by the City of Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission.
