Frosh Joins 21 Counterparts In Calling For Special Counsel On Russia Probe

May 11th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh joined 21 counterparts in calling on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel in the investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and any potential ties to President Donald Trump's campaign.

The letter, drafted by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, follows the firing of FBI Director James Comey and reflects a suspicion the firing was tied to White House efforts to hinder the probe.

"As prosecutors committed to the rule of law, we urge you to consider the damage to our democratic system of any attempts by the administration to derail and delegitimize the investigation," the attorneys general wrote.

Rosenstein, the former U.S. attorney for Maryland, is heading the Department of Justice's Russia investigation, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from campaign matters. It was Rosenstein who drafted a memorandum this week criticizing Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, a memorandum then used by Sessions and Trump to justify Comey's Tuesday dismissal.
