Frostburg man charged in armed robbery incident

At approximately 2:00 PM Saturday, an elderly female resident on Mt. Pleasant Street in Frostburg answered a knock at her door. When she answered the door, a lone male suspect, displaying a handgun, shoved her to the ground and removed jewelry from her person and residence. The suspect then fled the residence on foot. After being advised of the incident, the Frostburg Police responded to the scene, and with the assistance of the Maryland State Police, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, the Frostburg State University Police, an MSP K-9 dog, and the Maryland State Police helicopter, “Trooper 5”, a search for the suspect was initiated. Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) also responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The suspect was described as a short white male, wearing a dark jacket, and possibly a toboggan. As Officers were conducting the search, a witness provided information about a possible suspect, and a possible location where he may be located.  Officers responded to a private residence on Old National Pike in Frostburg where they located 28 year old Zachary Lee Winner, of Frostburg. Winner was detained as Investigators continued speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence.

 

            Investigators recovered some of the victim’s jewelry, which was positively identified by the victim, and the clothing being worn by Winner at the time of the incident. Investigators also obtained a search warrant for the Old National Pike residence, and during the search, recovered a look alike toy handgun believed to have been the one used by Winner during the incident.

 

            As a result, Winner was arrested and is being charged with Armed Robbery, Robbery, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, and Theft. Also arrested was 21 year old Melissa Ann McAteer, of Frostburg. She is being charged with Obstruction of Justice and False Statement to a Police Officer.

 

       

 

            The investigation is continuing by the Frostburg Police and C3I.
