Frostburg man sentenced to 25 years

Michael Twigg, State’s Attorney for Allegany County, announced that Zachary Lee Winner, 29, of Frostburg was sentenced to 25 years in the Maryland Department of Corrections for his involvement in an assault of an 89 year old Frostburg woman that occurred on January 21st, 2012 and a burglary of a Washington Street home in Frostburg occurring on January 10th, 2012.  Judge Gary Leasure sentenced Mr. Winner to 20 years for the assault with an additional 5 year sentence for the burglary.  The case was prosecuted by Michael Twigg, State’s Attorney.  Mr. Winner was represented by Michael Stankan of the Public Defender’s Office.   Twigg acknowledged the work of Det. Vincent Benson from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Det. Nicholas Costello from the Frostburg Police Department, who are both assigned to C3I, which ultimately led to Mr. Winner’s arrest.  Additionally, Twigg recognized the Frostburg Police department for their prompt response to the assault and the care that was provided to the elderly victim.  Twigg commented; “These burglaries and the assault of an elderly woman in our community were truly reprehensible.  Mr. Winner will have a long time to reflect upon these offenses while he is incarcerated in the Department of Corrections.”
