Frostburg State University Faces Accreditation Warning

July 6th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Frostburg State University was warned last month its accreditation could be in jeopardy if it does not improve how it assesses learning and uses those results to improve its curriculum.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which accredits colleges in Maryland and several other states, said it placed the Western Maryland college on "warn" status at its thrice-yearly meeting on June 23. The university remains accredited while on warn status and works to address the issues identified by the Middle States Commission.

Frostburg officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other Maryland colleges have gotten the same warning from the Middle States Commission in recent years. St. Mary's College of Maryland was placed on warn status in March until it improves student assessment, and Baltimore City Community College had its accreditation reaffirmed last year after being warned in 2014.

The Middle States Commission typically releases few details about what led it to take an action against a college's accreditation, and a spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the case of Frostburg, the commission said the school was out of compliance with two accreditation standards regarding institutional assessment and general education.
