Future Of Former Hospital Discussed

March 27th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland officials remain confident that a tenant will be found for the former Human Resources Development Commission building on Frederick Street, but they’re beginning to lose hope for Memorial Hospital. During a recent two-hour budget work session Mayor Brian Grim and council members discussed priorities for the coming year. One of the top agenda items: the future of the former hospital building, which, though partially leased, is costing the city around $250,000 a year to maintain. Currently there are about a dozen tenants, and recently talk of a dental clinic occupying the second floor has been on the table- however the facility has proven to be a money loser to date for the city. Prospects appear somewhat brighter for the former HRDC building at 19 Frederick St., which has also been empty for the last two years. Councilman David Kauffman, although he has pushed strongly for the facility to be utilized for post secondary education purposes, said he would be willing to listen to any group interested in occupying the 15,500-square-foot space. ..
