Future Of Verso Facility Still Remains Up In The Air

July 1st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

During the past month, The Verso Corporation has continued the process of closing the Luke Mill, but what the future holds for the facility still remains very much up in the air.

District 1 State Senator George Edwards has maintained from the closing announcement that the ball remains in Verso’s court…

Economic Development officials from both Maryland and West Virginia have been working on the issue.

Hopefully, Cumberland and Allegany County economic development officials are not participating in this as the chances of turning the mill into a Chipotle restaurant are pretty slim. If it’s not retail it doesn’t belong in the area.

A Chipotle in Luke probably wouldn’t be a good bet. Word on the street is that the McDonald’s in Westernport is on the chopping block. Also wouldn’t surprise me if Westmar Middle becomes a K-8 school and Westernport and Georges Creek Elem. are closed. My daughter, who lives down state, suggested that the M&T building would be a great site for an IT hub rather than a boutique hotel. Thousands of people work off-site in the tech industry and would relish getting out of beltway traffic and $2K a month leases. Maybe an influx of jobs like that would get us the coveted Panera Bread restaurant that rings everyone’s chimes.
