Gas Tax Could See Increases Beginning This Summer

With just three weeks to go in the 2013 Maryland General Assembly session, one of the major issues that still needs to pass at least one chamber of the Maryland General Assembly by next week's crossover deadline is the transportation funding bill that the governor introduced earlier this month. The House Ways and Means Committee took testimony on the bill Friday, and on Friday night, a Ways and Means Subcommittee met with a legislative analyst and asked for a list of possible alternatives to the plan. The governor's bill was introduced two weeks ago.  The net impact for motorists will be a 2-cent-a-gallon increase in the price of gasoline in July, another 7-cent-a gallon increase in July of next year, and possibly another 7-cent-a-gallon increase in July, 2015. The 2015 increase will be dependent on whether or not the state gets federal permission to collect a sales tax on online purchases. If the state cannot collect that tax, the second 7-cent-a-gallon increase would take effect in July, 2015.     What is the state trying to do to us in Allegany and Garrett counties? We are lucky if we have enough money left over to pay for gas to go to work. Or food for our kids.
