Gas Tax Set To Increase

April 9th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Thousands of bills are introduced and dealt with by the Maryland General Assembly during the 90 day session- however the one this year that will probably have the swiftest impact is the governor’s gas tax hike. In July, the cost of gas is expected to go up 4 cents per gallon. By 2017, drivers will be paying about 20 cents more per gallon than they’re paying today, according to data from legislative analysts.  The State Senate passed the bill by a vote of 27-20, while the House of Delegates passed the bill, 76-63. It’s now headed to the governor’s desk. Opponents, including State Senator George Edwards called the tax “regressive,” lamenting the fast track the bill took after it was introduced by O’Malley and the General Assembly’s presiding officers in late March. Edwards complained the bill moved too fast through the General Assembly saying that it didn’t give lawmakers significant time to evaluate it.  Comptroller Peter Franchot has been a staunch opponent of the concept of a gas tax hike for two years…
