Gov. Hogan Criticizes Move To Cut State Police Budget

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has criticized the House of Delegates for including a $2.4 million cut in the State Police budget as part of the fiscal plan approved last week. Hogan said at a time when there is increasing violence, and a heroin epidemic it is simply “unconscionable” to propose any reduction in funding for law enforcement. However, Maggie McIntosh, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, says the governor doesn’t understand how the reduction will work.  She says the budget reduction doesn’t cut the number of troopers, saying that it actually has the reverse effect- putting more troopers on active police duty.  She says the proposal eliminates a class of troopers from the State Police Academy and it will move 50 other troopers back on the street, with their administrative jobs taken over by civilian workers, who are paid less than troopers…
