With just a few days remaining in the 2012 session of the Maryland General Assembly, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley said he wants lawmakers to approve some form of increased transportation funding. The governor had proposed imposing the state's sales tax on gasoline over three years, but he said this week that lawmakers should consider increasing the overall sales tax rate from 6% to 7%. He said the state's sales tax is the ninth lowest in the nation, and the state can raise the money it needs for highways by raising the sales tax. This is not the first time O'Malley has advocated a sales tax increase. O'Malley suggested the idea at the start of this year's legislative session in January. At the time, Senate President Mike Miller called the idea "dead on arrival"- however the Governor remains convinced that one or the other has to be approved…
