Governor Martin O'Malley has elaborated on his public safety priorities for this year's legislative session. O'Malley said Friday he wants to make $25 million available for schools to invest in security like locks and cameras. O'Malley also wants to boost the number of Maryland State Police officers. O'Malley also will be seeking to renew a DNA sample collection law for people charged with violent crimes and burglary that's set to expire at the end of the year. Maryland's highest court has ruled the law is unconstitutional, but the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case. The Democratic governor also outlined plans he discussed earlier this week during a summit on gun violence at Johns Hopkins University. They include a ban on military-style assault weapons, fingerprinting for those applying for a gun license and stricter licensing requirements.
