Greater Cumberland Committee Updates Route 219 Project

It was announced by the Greater Cumberland Committee last fall that portions of the U.S. Route 219 Somerset to Meyersdale project are on track to open in 2018. Executive Director Brenda Smith says that project will result in 11 miles of new, four-lane limited-access highway.  Construction on the Maryland portion of the project, which includes realigning U.S. 219 north of Interstate 68 and constructing a new interchange, could begin next year. The North/South Appalachian Highway is comprised of two distinct legs, U.S. 219 North and U.S. 220 South. As a total corridor, it is projected to create 10,000 permanent and 20,000 construction and construction-related jobs in the region.  David Moe, North/South Appalachian Highway project coordinator, said local officials in Allegany County met recently with the Maryland State Highway Administration on the 220 end of the project…
