Groundbreaking Ceremony Held For New Animal Adoption/Care Facility

A groundbreaking ceremony for the planned new animal adoption and care facility on Furnace Street was held Thursday afternoon. The Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation voted last summer to accept the design development plans submitted by Stoiber and Associates of Washington for the project.  The foundation received the detailed drawings and materials proposal last May as the second step in a multi-phase agreement with the architects to create a $2.5 million 7,700-square-foot adoption center.  The architect’s plans call for an 11,000-square-foot energy efficient building that will become operational in two phases, beginning with the adoption center, followed by a 3,300-square-foot clinical care wing in Phase Two. Foundation President Becky McClarran said the incident last week that saw more than 30 dogs found abandoned in a home on Greene Street- while tragic, demonstrated just how much need there is for a new, larger facility to house and care for the animals.
