There is growing speculation that Maryland’s republican governor-elect Larry Hogan will offer a cabinet level position to State Senator George Edwards- and if that were to occur, an interesting game of political dominos could begin in western Maryland. Edwards, 66, has served in the general assembly since 1983, and is now rumored to be Hogan’s choice to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources. He told WCBC News this week that he has not been contacted by anyone in the Hogan transition team about an appointment. IF Edwards were to be asked, accept and be appointed as DNR Secretary- his state senate seat, representing Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties would become available. That would be an appointment from the governor’s office after receiving nominees from the republican central committees from each of the three western counties. Among those rumored to have an interest in the senate seat include Allegany County Commissioner, and House of Delegates 1C –elect Mike McKay; Paul Edwards, the senator’s son, is the current Mayor of Grantsville and Garrett County Commissioner –elect, and has been identified as perhaps wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps- however indications are that he wouldn’t consider it at this time. Finally, outgoing House 1C representative Leroy Myers, a Washington County Commissioner-elect, is also said to have an interest in the senate seat- with his wife Cumberland City Councilwoman Nicole Alt Myers said to be interested in the 1C seat. For Hogan’s part, all he has said is that he will work toward having a balanced, bi partisan staff and cabinet…
