Gunshot Victim Treatment Leads to Arrest

On March 26, 2014 at approximately 1820 hours deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to the Potomac Valley Hospital in reference to a gunshot victim. The hospital reported the incident and advised it had occurred in the McCoole, Maryland area earlier in the evening. Upon deputies arriving at the hospital they contacted the male victim who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the hand. The victim advised an altercation occurred at a residence located on McCoole Drive between him and the suspect who was later identified as Roger Lee Paugh Jr. (age 22) from Elk Garden West Virginia. According to the victim, Roger Paugh Jr. struck him in the face, then produced a handgun and discharged it in the direction of the victim's head. The victim had turned to run and was subsequently struck in the hand by the bullet. Roger Paugh fled the scene prior to deputies arriving on scene. 

An investigation was conducted and charges were filed against Roger Lee Paugh Jr. The West Virginia State Police along with assistance from the Mineral County Sheriff's Office located Mr. Paugh in the Keyser West Virginia area and he was taken into custody without incident. Mr. Paugh was charged with the following crimes in reference to this case.

  • Attempted 2nd Degree Murder
  • 1st Degree Assault
  • 2nd Degree Assault
  • Handgun on Person
  • Firearm Use/Felony Violent Crime

Roger Paugh Jr. will be held at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail pending extradition back to Maryland.
