Hagerstown motel fire ruled arson

August 16th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

A Deputy State Fire Marshal reported to an arson at a Motel 6 in Hagerstown this morning where a woman set fire to her room by igniting paper and cardboard.

At 2:35 a.m. the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company was called to room 308 of the Motel 6 on 1321 Massey Boulevard after occupants in the adjoining rooms observed smoke and a woman fleeing. The State Fire Marshal's Western Regional Office reported shortly after and discovered Ms. Diane Susan Webster, 66, of Hagerstown, concealed behind the motel among tree limbs and weeds. Her room suffered $2,000 in damages as the fire spread across the carpet and along the sides of the entrance doorway.

Webster was transported to Meritus Medical Center for evaluation before being taken into custody, and detained, at the Washington County Detention Center without bond. She is charged with felony first degree arson and reckless endangerment, if convicted, she would face up to 35 years and/or $55,000 in total fines.

It took 27 firefighters approximately five minutes to extinguish the fire. The activated smoke alarm, and quick response by the neighboring guests, are credited for the minimal damage of this arson.
