Hearing On Heritage Area Expansion Set For Tuesday

The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2016 on a request to enlarge the boundaries of the Canal Place Heritage Area (www.canalplace.org ) to include the Greene St. National Register Historic District, portions of the Canada/Viaduct Survey District, Candoc & Mason Recreational District/Riverside area of the C&O Canal Preservation District within the City of Cumberland.

The Canal Place Heritage Area was the first Certified Heritage Area in Maryland , created in 1993 by State legislation. The locally-based Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority manages the heritage area which is comprised of approximately 395 acres in the City of Cumberland. Certified Heritage Areas foster partnerships between governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations to promote more livable and economically sustainable communities. They preserve and celebrate Maryland’s history, cultural traditions, and natural areas through grants, loans, tax credits and other tools.
