Hearings Held On Number Of Tax Bills

On Tuesday in Annapolis, the House Ways and Means Committee held hearings on a number of  tax bills, including one to expand the sales tax to cover about 30 different services including cable television and gym memberships. The bill would also extend the sales tax to auto repairs. The committee is also considering a proposed 2% tax on capital gains.  The sponsor of that bill points out that tax would only impact, the wealthiest Maryland taxpayers, the upper 1%. Delegate Wendell Beitzel told WCBC News early in the session he believes “everything” will be on the table for discussion when it comes to the budget this session. House Minority Leader Tony O'Donnell says he understands the need to create additional revenue to help off set cuts, but he believes the governor and some lawmakers are going too far…
