As heavy rain pelted eastern Allegany County Tuesday evening, local fire and emergency services officials report minor incidents with no personal injury.
“Fire departments east of Cumberland handled minor incidents such as trees down, roadway flooding and flooded basements,” Todd Bowman, public information officer for Allegany County Department of Emergency Services said. “The most active areas included Oldtown, Flintstone and Little Orleans.”
Bear Hill Road at Pumpkin Center remains closed due to storm damage and flooding conditions, according to Roger Bennett, deputy director of operations for Allegany County Department of Emergency Services. County roads is working to repair a portion of the road in the area. A detour is in place at Oliver Beltz Road.
“Opessa Street in Oldtown was closed last night due to high water,” Bennett said. “That was re-opened at approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday.”
“The two (actual) totals that we have received are Green Ridge with 3.24 inches of rain and south Cumberland with 1.05 inches of rain,” Kyle Pallozzi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service said. “The heaviest band of rain stretched from the Potomac River to the Bedford County line, just east of Cumberland.”
“We are expecting showers and thunderstorm to develop early this afternoon with some risks for severe storms,” Pallozzi said. “The risks could stretch into the early evening with active weather conditions.”
Pallozzi added that with the already saturated ground from Tuesday evening’s storms, the risk for flooding is greater today.
“We urge citizens to stay alert for rapidly deteriorating weather conditions,” Bowman said. “We encourage residents to monitor local media and weather services for updates and active weather alerts and to use extreme caution while driving.”
