The state is reporting its highest high school graduation rate in memory. But data just released show the high school drop out rate has also increased slightly. The Maryland State Department of Education says 87% of Maryland high school students graduated in June. That was up a half a percent from last year and 2% since 2007. The State Department of Education data also show that the high school drop out rate in Maryland is up from last year. This year's rate is 3.2% compared to 2.5% in 2010. Locally the numbers were slightly better with Allegany County’s graduation rate increased from 89.65 percent in 2010 to 90.81 percent in 2011, which is higher than the state average. The dropout rate for public schools decreased from 2.22 percent in 2010 to 1.95 percent in 2011 as compared to the state’s increase.
