Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot, at a press conference in Ocean City today are expected to announce an executive order forcing schools to open after Labor Day. Hogan and Franchot will be joined by local officials including the Mayor of Ocean City as well as business owners and community leaders.
Franchot has pushed for Maryland schools to delay the fall start date in past years, with the governor’s support. The comptroller argued last year that a post-Labor Day school start date would boost tourism, citing a 2013 study by Maryland's Bureau of Revenue Estimates that determined a post-Labor Day start date could generate $7.7 million in state and local revenue.
Among those who has been opposed to the proposal is Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox. Dr Cox says that the school system's yearly schedule include holiday breaks, staff professional development and standardized testing- and while the length of some breaks can be changed, events such as the College Board's Advanced Placement tests are set nationally.
