Hogan Appoints New Lottery, Gaming Head

Governor Larry Hogan today announced Gordon Medenica as his appointee for the Director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA).

“Gordon Medenica will bring a wealth of lottery and business experience to the agency,” said Governor Hogan. “I am confident that he will be committed to maintaining the integrity of the agency, as well as ensuring that the casino and gaming program continues to run efficiently and effectively .”

As a former New York Lottery Director and President of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), Medenica’s career in the industry includes experience operating lotteries under both public and private management. Most recently, he was the transitional CEO of Northstar New Jersey Lottery Group, which won the contract to manage sales, marketing and related functions for the New Jersey Lottery. During his tenure as Director of the New York Lottery from 2007 to 2012, Medenica set new revenue records every year, with $8.4 billion in sales and over $3 billion in profits.

Before his entry into the lottery industry, Medenica had been a longtime executive and member of the Management Committee of The New York Times Company. More recently, he was the Executive Vice President of Philadelphia Media Holdings, LLC, an owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. Prior to that, Medenica served as an advisor to the Blackstone Group on newspaper acquisitions, and as the President and CEO of Dorna USA, a sports marketing company. Earlier, Medenica was a Senior Analyst at the Marriott Corporation.

Medenica earned his AB from Harvard College, where he majored in government, and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
