Hogan fundraising pitch tied to post-Labor Day school start date

September 10th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's latest fundraising pitch relies on the premise that Democrats will fight his executive order mandating Maryland public schools start after Labor Day and end by June 15.

The Baltimore Sun reports that In a fundraising email to supporters this week, Hogan cast the disagreement as his attempt to institute common sense over the objections of "political insiders."

The governor's announcement last week sparked a firestorm as some praised his move, educators warned it could require them to eliminate spring break, and Democrats questioned whether the governor had the authority to mandate it at all.

Two years into his term, Hogan continues to characterize himself as an outsider in contrast to "career politicians" at the helm of power in Annapolis.
