Homelessness On The Rise In Maryland

Homelessness in Maryland increased by nearly 7 percent between 2014 and 2015, according to statistics released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. While the state has seen an overall drop over the past five years, the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maryland rose from 7,856 last year to 8,390 this year — a 6.8 percent increase, HUD found. Nationally, homelessness fell 2 percent in the same time period. While Maryland homelessness increased overall, homelessness among veterans in the state fell more than 9 percent between 2014 and 2015. The figures on are based on the agency's point-in-time estimates, which measure the scope of homelessness on a single night in January each year.
