Housing Authority employees charged in theft case

July 30th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

After a three and a half month investigation into allegations that items had been stolen from a tenant’s residence in the Klotz Mill apartments, two employees of the Cumberland Housing Authority have been charged with Theft.

The allegations were first reported to the Cumberland Police and the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) in late March 2014. Investigators learned that the tenant had recently passed away. Proper procedure requires that the next of kin be notified in order to make arrangements concerning the property left behind. In this case, Investigators learned that two large flat screen televisions had been removed from the apartment prior to the family taking possession of the remainder of the deceased tenant’s property.

As a result, Investigators applied for and obtained criminal charges for the two employees who were identified as being responsible, 58 year old Leroy Francis Bennett, Jr., of Oldtown, and 50 year old William Joseph Beechie III, of Frostburg. On 07/17/2014 both were charged via a criminal summons with Theft Scheme Over $1000.00 and Under $10,000.00. Both are free pending their next scheduled court appearance.
