Howard County sheriff will resign

October 11th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Howard County sheriff under fire for using racist language and retaliating against employees is resigning from office, according to county officials. Howard County Council Chairman Calvin Ball said Sheriff James Fitzgerald will sign an agreement that his last day in office will be Oct. 15. The agreement is to be signed by the close of business Tuesday, Ball said in a statement. The Baltimore Sun reports Fitzgerald has been pressed to resign by fellow politicians and Howard County residents ever since a report was made public last month detailing allegations of harassment and retaliation by the sheriff.

Gov. Larry Hogan will be charged with replacing Fitzgerald, according to the Maryland Constitution.
