Thursday was Blaze Orange Day in Annapolis. About a hundred hunters decked out in cammoflague and wearing blaze orange caps were at the State House meeting with lawmakers. They are seeking legislation to allow Sunday hunting in Baltimore County, one of three counties where Sunday hunting is banned. Leaders of the Maryland Horseman's Council oppose it, noting the hunting may lead to accidents where hunters shoot horses, but Alan Ellis, executive director of the Maryland Hunting Coalition says that under Maryland law, private property owners can ban hunting on their property. He says horse owners can take advantage of that restriction. Sunday hunting is banned in Baltimore, Howard and Prince George's Counties. It was banned statewide from colonial times until 2003. Since then, hunters and the Department of Natural Resources have successfully pushed to expand Sunday hunting, county by county. The DNR says hunting is the best way to control the deer population. The DNR says it wants to make Sunday deer hunting uniform statewide.
