I-81 Reopened After Accident Involving 21 Vehicles

At 16:18 hrs. monday evening, Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack of the Maryland State Police responded to the area of S/B I-81 between Exit 1 and the West Virginia state line for a report of several multiple vehicle collisions.   Traffic apparently slowed abruptly due to stopped or slowing traffic in the area of the West Virginia line.  The collisions resulted in the closure of all of I-81 S/B.  Upon troopers arrival,  it was determined that a total of three (3) separate collisions had taken place in the area s/o Exit 1, involving 21 total vehicles;  5 tractor trailers, 1 motor home and 15 passenger vehicles.  A separate collision was located on the bridge over the Potomac River, s/b, involving 4 additional vehicles.

     A total of 15 persons were transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment.

     Fifteen (15) vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

     Multiple drivers were cited for fault in the accident.  Driver error and weather/road conditions were contributing factors.

     Troopers were assisted by numerous units from various Washington County Fire and Rescue and the State Highway Administration. 

     The above collisions also resulted in several minor collisions in the resulting backup.

     The roadway was reopened at approximately 20:45 hrs.

     Investigation is continuing presently.
