UPDATED: Ice Storm Brings Power Outages & Road Hazards

December 17th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County Director of Emergency Services Dick Devore this morning urged residents to stay in while an ice storm coated what seemed to be the entire county with a glaze.

Potomac Edison crews were called to an outage in the Cumberland area.  Earlier, it numbered 159, but by 8 AM, that number had been cut to 71 customers.  There are also 272 customers without service in the Martinsburg area.

12 PM UPDATE:  As of noon, Potomac Edison was reporting only a handful of outages in Allegany County, centered in the Westernport area.  Around 10 AM, crews were summoned when 1500 customers near Shades Lane lost electric.  Over 300 are without power in Mineral County, with half of those in the Fort Ashby area, 100 in Burlington and 50 some in Keyser.

Roads crews are tackling the immediate problem as well, but there are slippery conditions all over, and especially on secondary roads that have yet to be treated.

The National Weather Service says temperatures will rise above freezing later today, and that will solve the ice issues.
