Last July’s public meeting orchestrated by the Allegany County Commissioners with an eye toward combining or consolidating services with towns and municipalities has yet to bare any fruit- however talks are ongoing behind the scenes. The concept of combining services has been discussed for many years as a way of providing some costs savings as well as streamlining and making for a more efficient operation- and while some consolidation has occurred, they have been relatively minor. At a recent budget session of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council, the idea of consolidations services such as planning, tax collection and code enforcement with the county were mentioned as possibilities.
