Informal Consolidation Talks Taking Place With County

Last July’s public meeting orchestrated by the Allegany County Commissioners with an eye toward combining or consolidating services with towns and municipalities has yet to bare any fruit- however talks are ongoing behind the scenes. The concept of combining services has been discussed for many years as a way of providing some costs savings as well as streamlining and making for a more efficient operation- and while some consolidation has occurred, they have been relatively minor. At a recent budget session of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council, the idea of consolidations services such as planning, tax collection and code enforcement with the county were mentioned as possibilities. City Administrator Jeff Rhodes said that some informal talks have been taking place with the county…
