According to the Internal Investigative Unit (IIU) of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and Maryland State Police- an investigation is underway into the apparent homicide of an inmate this morning at maximum-security North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland. The 30-year old victim was found unresponsive in his cell before dawn this morning as inmates were returning from breakfast.  He had been serving life for homicide and weapons charges and had been in prison since 2009. Upon finding the inmate unresponsive in his bunk, correctional officers initiated CPR and continued it until medical staff arrived to take over. The inmate was pronounced dead a short time later. The State Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, which is being treated as a homicide.
