Inmate indicted on murder charges

An inmate of the Western Correctional Institution has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his cellmate, according to the Office of the State’s Attorney.Thomas Griggs, 56, was indicted by the grand jury last week in connection with the Sept. 12, 2014 death of 69-year-old John Wyatt.

Wyatt was initially believed to have died of natural causes until the Maryland Examiner’s Office determined his death was the result of homicide.

Wyatt was serving life plus 10 years for convictions in Anne Arundel County for sex offenses, burglary, false imprisonment and weapons charges.

Griggs is reportedly serving a life sentence for a 1980 rape conviction in Garrett County.

The investigation was conducted by the Maryland State Police with assistance of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
