Issue Of HS Football Player Safety To The Forefront

A scary moment occurred during Friday’s high school football playoff game at Greenway Avenue Stadium when Fort Hill senior quarterback Nathaniel Graves was injured in the final seconds of the first half. There was a 25-minute delay as Graves lay near-motionless before being carried from the field.  Graves was knocked out of the game after taking a hit during a seven-yard run. He lost his helmet near the end of the play, and apparently took a hit to the head while reaching for the ball, which he had fumbled. It brought the issue of player safety to the forefront, as incidents of players having their helmets either knocked off or pulled off by opposing players are on the rise. Paul Miller, a former coach who currently serves as WCBC Sports sideline reporter, said in the recent homecoming game along he counted six plays where a player lost his helmet…
