WCBC News has learned that after nearly forty years- and in the midst of a drug epidemic- the Jackson Unit is closing its doors. The Jackson Unit, a licensed residential adolescent addiction treatment program specializing in treating substance abuse and addiction, opened in 1980 and is operated by the Allegany County Health Department. Although the facility services the entire state- apparently the decision to close was based on a lack of referrals. The plan is for the unit to close in August, with the adult program, Massie Unit, to expand into the JU cottage at the Finan Center. Cumberland City Councilman Richard “Rock” Cioni was the very first director of the Jackson Unit, and although now retired, he still serves as a consultant…
