Jumper Arrested

March 25th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

On Monday, March 24, 2014 at approximately 2:58 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to the bridge on Valley Street near Mechanic Street in reference to a subject possibly jumping off the Valley Street Bridge.  The subject was observed by an Allegany County Board of Education School Bus Driver.  The bus driver stated that the subject was a white male wearing a hat and work boots.  The bus driver stated that she observed this subject to jump off the bridge.

Cumberland Police Officers immediately checked this area as well as several bridges downstream of the Valley Street Bridge.  Wills Creek runs below, the water level was close to normal and was clear.  The Cumberland Fire Department responded to the scene and provided assistance by checking the stream.  Maryland State Police Helicopter, Trooper Five responded and checked Wills Creek with negative results.  No subjects were located in the water.

While checking the bridge officers located fresh hand marks and smudges on the rail of the bridge.  This portion of the bridge is over land and not the water.  This appears to be the area where the subject climbed up on the rail and jumped down.  The distance of this jump would be eight to ten feet to the ground.

Further investigation led to the subject being identified as a 16 year old male. This juvenile was located and identified by a separate eye witness. The juvenile was then placed under arrest and transported to Police headquarters for processing. The juvenile was then released to the custody of his mother pending further action through the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Arrested: 16 year old male, Cumberland, MD

Charges: Disorderly Conduct.
