A Baltimore woman was convicted of second-degree assault by a Garrett County jury on Thursday for stabbing another student in the Garrett College cafeteria last year. The Cumberland Times News reports Shamaine Nikia Moore, 20, was acquitted of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the Jan. 2015 stabbing of Daniqua Harrington, 21, of Washington. During the three-day trial, Moore maintained she acted in self-defense.
“I believe that, in rendering this verdict, the jury was acknowledging that Moore felt she needed to defend herself but either that belief was not reasonable, or the use of the potentially deadly force was not warranted, or both,” said Lisa Thayer Welch, Garrett County's state's attorney, in a news release.
Circuit Court Judge Ray Strubin revoked Moore’s bond and committed her to the Garrett County Detention Center pending sentencing. A pre-sentence investigation was also ordered. She faces up to 10 years in prison. No sentencing date was set.
According to Welch, Harrington punched Moore and knocked her to the floor. Harrington struck Moore a couple more times before Moore pulled a knife from her pocket and stabbed Harrington.
Harrington was treated at Garrett Regional Medical Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Moore was represented by attorney Michael Stankan.
