Keyser business has computer “hacked”

July 6th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports the Keyser Police Department received a complaint from a Keyser business that their computer had been “hacked” and they all of their information had been frozen. A message was left on the victim's business computer that the files would be unfrozen and restored if they paid a sum of money.  The business is a part of a national organization and it was learned that the “hack” was confined to the local business and the national organization was not affected. "At this time, it is believed this is a scam that originates outside the country. This investigation is continuing and the State Attorney General’s Office has been contacted," said a spokesman for the Keyser Police Department. The Keyser Police Department is reminding anyone that maintains files with internet access to back up those files as a precaution to protect their computer system. Anyone with questions about the matter may contact Keyser Police at 304-788-1311.
