Knife Wielding Cumberland Man Arrested on Assault

On May 19th, 2015, at approximately 5:30 P.M. a deputy of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office was in the area of Arch Street and Industrial Blvd, when he observed two juveniles rapidly walking past his location. The deputy then observed an adult male walking aggressively towards the juveniles with what the deputy identified to be a large hunting-type knife. The deputy contacted the male who initially approached the deputy and refused to drop the weapon. The male then ran into a residence and exited twice before complying with the deputy's orders. The male was identified as 37 year old James Douglas Welsh of Cumberland. Additional Deputies from the Sheriff's Office as well as Cumberland City Police responded to assist.

Investigation revealed that Welsh allegedly was attempting to assault one or both of the juveniles with the knife. Welsh was taken into custody without further incident and chagred with:

1st Degree Assault

2nd Degree Assault

2nd Degree Child Abuse

Disorderly Conduct

Failing to Obey a Lawful Order

 

Welsh was taken before a District Court Commissioner and held on $25,000.00 at the Allegany County Detention Center.
