La Plata Nursing Home Fined For Poor Infection Control Practices

May 7th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports the state government is fining a Charles County nursing home after an oversight survey discovered insufficient infection control practices. The nursing home has more coronavirus deaths than any other in the state.

The Office of Health Care Quality found staff at Sagepoint Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata failed to obtain timely lab results, use appropriate hand hygiene, use personal protective equipment and segregate residents with suspected or known COVID-19.

The office is fining the facility $10,000 per day, backdated to March 30 and continuing until the facility is in compliance with state regulations.

"Based on the seriousness of these findings, it is imperative that you immediately determine the measures that are necessary to correct these deficient practices, what systemic changes you will develop to ensure that this does not happen again, and what quality improvement process will be implemented to oversee the system," OHCQ Executive Director Patricia Tomsko Nay wrote.
