Land Swap For New School in Works

It appears as though all three parties have a desire to move forward with a proposed land swap that could lead to a new Allegany High School being built on the site of the former Sacred Heart Hospital facility on Seton Drive- although at least one Cumberland Council member is calling for a public hearing before any decisions are made. The proposal,  developed by Western Maryland Health System President and CEO Barry Ronan and presented publicly last week by School Board Superintendent David Cox asks the city to give 40 acres of land near Constitution Park to the Health System, which in return would give the school board the empty hospital and 22 acres within the city limits. The parkside land abuts the new Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Willowbrook Road.  Ronan tells WCBC News that he conceived of the land swap idea after determining that giving away the former Braddock Campus for nothing would not be in the best interest of the health system…
