State Board Waives Three Sandy Days; Last Day for Teachers Now June 18th

The Board of Education of Allegany County approved a student make-up day schedule for instructional days missed during the 2012-2013 academic school year at their March 12, 2013, school board meeting.  Since the approval of this new schedule, the school system has incurred two more missed days due to inclement weather.  The last day of school for students will now be Monday, June 10, 2013, and the last day of school for teachers will be Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

The State Board of Education approved Dr. Cox’s request to waive the three days of school missed in October as a result of Hurricane Sandy since Maryland was declared in a state of emergency.  To date, students have missed a total of eight instructional days, including those missed during the hurricane, but thanks to the waiver, will only be required to make-up five.

The school board, at the superintendent’s request, will utilize those make-up days the following way:  students will now go to school the last two days of Spring Break on Thursday, April 4, 2013, and Friday, April 5, 2013; and at the end of the school year on Thursday, June 6, 2013, Friday, June 7, 2013, and Monday, June 10, 2013.  Monday will be a three-hour early dismissal.

“I have received input from teachers, administrators, and parents regarding the assignment of make-up days,” said Dr. Cox.  “While no solution is without its drawbacks, I believe that instructional days in April have greater value than those later in June.”  He went on to say, “It is with this recognition that I recommended using the last two days of the tentatively scheduled Spring Break as make-up days.  This solution still provides our students, staff and their families with four school days off for Spring Break.”
