Last Weeks Hearing On House Bill 335 Demonstrates Clear Split

Last week’s hearing on House Bill 335 before the Ways and Means Committee in Annapolis featured some interesting dynamics- and demonstrated a clear split among elected officials representing Allegany County on the issue of school choice. The hearing centered on a bill introduced by Delegate Leroy Myers addressing the issue of allowing parents the options of sending their students to out of county schools. Although a state bill- it was drafted essentially to overturn an Allegany County School Board decision last year to phase out the Washington County option for students in the Little Orleans area. Among those speaking in favor of the bill were Delegate Myers and Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine. Those testifying against included school board members Sara Beth James and Laurie Marchini as well as Delegate Kevin Kelly.  Kelly, emphasizing that he is the only member of the delegation to actually reside within Allegany County, said there are any number of problems with the bill …
